From Central Park to the U.S. Capitol and White House grounds, Frederick Law Olmsted and two generations of successor firms helped shape the American landscape and define landscape architecture. Landscape historian Charles A. Birnbaum , founder and CEO of the Cultural Landscape Foundation, follows the Olmsted practice from 1857 to 1979, highlighting the designers and ideas that transformed parks, campuses, and cities. Their innovations, including park systems and landscape as infrastructure, continue to influence design today.
